Popular ways to pop on the polish...

For years women have been painting their nails to feel beautiful, elegant and empowered but now there are so many ways to decorate it's hard to choose which one to go for.

If you're creative and daring like the lovely Katy Perry, then you could spend a lifetime thinking of inventive ways to show off those nails and working them for the camera on the red carpet.

Perry is most definitely an inspiration to for those looking to glam up their nails as she has sported everything from edible sprinkle and a japanese sushi-inspired mani to falsies with her hubby Russell Brand all over them, (which are our faves!)

A popular look all summer, which can easily be adapted for A/W is the multicoloured manicure sported by celebs including Fearne Cotton and Made in Chelsea's Caggie Dunlop.

Find shades including rich berries, oranges and purples and coat a different finger nail with as many or little of the colours as you like.

Another way to inject alternate shades into your look is by going for one colour, green for instance and using different shades of that colour from light to dark or dark to light from thumb to pinky - done right and it will look like a fancy wall chart sample!

An easy way to get a different look from your nail varnish every time is to paint a layer of crackle varnish over the top of your colour. It adds drama to your look and is easily changed depending on the season. Where you might have been going for the neon colours whilst sunning yourself in summer, add warmth with reds and golds in autumn.

Or if your in a rush but don't want to neglect your nails why not go for a metallic or glitter varnish? These add instant bling and can be matched to the colour of an outfit or your jewellery. Metallic also promises to be a big hit for the a/w season; it's sexy, sophisticated but screams power-dressing!

Animal print is not a look exclusive to clothes for next season, it also works great on your finger tips too. Find yourself some nail wrap sheets either online or from the highstreet and do as the instructions say. They're quick and simple to use and work great either for casual or night looks. A quick tip: Go for the zebra print ones as they not only look fab but tie in great with the upcoming monochrome trend too!

Katy Perry is also a fan of the nail wrap as she showed of her artistic efforts on Twitter a few months ago with her vintage, floral-patterned nails.

One of my favourite looks is to use nail stickers. They're cheap and come in a whole host of pack selections (at the moment, I'm sporting leopard print hearts) and can be put over any colour nail polish you have to hand. Put them on as many or little of your nails that you like and position them at different points of the nail for extra effect.

Long or short nails, they work every time!

Happy experimenting!
