How much do you spend getting prepped for a night out?

Getting ready for a night out takes a lot of effort – doesn’t it ladies. But have you ever considered how much it costs?

New research has revealed the true cost of a night out and what that equates to over a lifetime – and the number is a little more than shocking.

British women spend almost £40,000 on making sure their hair and make-up is perfect for a night out.

Each month that cost came in at £104, which over a year amounted to £1,248. A going out lifetime was taken as 32 years bringing the total spend in at £39,936.

The biggest cost each month was on fake tan with those questioned spending around £30 to make sure their body looked bronzed. Many applied their own fake tan according to the survey, while some opted for a slightly more expensive spray tan.

Having beautiful talons was a must for the women who agreed spending £25 on a good manicure was essential ahead of a night out. Those who did their own nails said they’d happily shell out around £5 for a nail varnish to match their outfit.

The third highest cost was on having hair blow dried with £20 being the average spent on this. The women agreed that if their hair looked great, then they felt great.

Eyebrow wax and tint was another must do before a night out, costing £10 with fake eyelashes and a new lipstick also making the list priced at around £7 each.

One woman said: “Going on a big night out with the girls is not cheap. I always want to look my best and think nothing of spending over £100 to look the part. That’s without taking into account a new outfit and shoes, and the odd occasion when I have hair extensions put in or have a facial a couple of days before.”

A second commented: “I was shocked when I worked out exactly how much I spend on my hair and face before hitting the town – yet compared to some of my closest friends, I don’t spend much at all.

“It’s those little bits you buy that start to add up and when you factor in the necessary beauty treatments, then it’s easy to see why us girls spend so much.”

However one lady doesn’t see the point in a big beauty spend: “I never bother with all this fuss before I go out. I can’t see the point of fake tan, I do my own hair, paint my own nails and use a lipstick I’ve had for ages. Going out for me is about enjoying time with my nearest and dearest, not about how I look.”

A spokeswoman from Hairtrade.com, who conducted the research, said: “For some women the getting ready is all part of the big night out, so you can understand why they’re happy to shell out to make sure they feel and look good.

“It is nice to make a big effort every now and again. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t treat yourself to a bit of pampering before a night out.”
