Is Adele The Unlikely Fashion Star Of 2009?

9 months ago 06th Feb 11:00

Eyebrows were undoubtedly raised when Adele was announced as the latest cover star of American Vogue, not least because Anna Wintour herself chose the Chasing Pavements star.

Events such as these rarely happen in everyday fashion life, so when all this came to light we were understandably a bit stunned.

It's not like she has ever been known for her fashion choices, or ever been hailed as a style icon, but all that could be set to change when she makes her Vogue debut.

Not only was she handpicked by the legend that is Wintour, but she was also photographed by the iconic Annie Liebowitz, who has also reportedly recently shot Michelle Obama for some kind of Vogue feature.

Adele later described her meeting with Wintour as, "just like The Devil Wears Prada" but Wintour clearly took to the British songstress, offering to dress her for the Grammy's and sources say they've already picked an outfit for the ceremony.

She revealed, "I got a really nice dress. I don't ever wear dresses. I wear dresses with tights and flat shoes and a cardigan. But I am going to get my boobs out and everything. It's going to be quite a big deal," reports Marie Claire.

While we're eager to see the results of Adele's cover with Vogue, we're also a tad sceptical about the motives behind it in the first place.

Vogue is fashion on many levels, but with declining sales and reports of Wintour's retirement, the magazine isn't what it once was. Could featuring Adele on the cover be a last ditch attempt to be seen as up-to-date?

After all, they were recently criticised for featuring Gossip Girl's Blake Lively on the cover last month, with critics questioning if she was indeed worthy of landing such a prestigious cover.

This is yet another high risk, which could go either way for Wintour and Vogue. It could be seen as the dawn of a new Vogue, who is willing to promote women of all shapes and sizes, or it could be seen as going against everything Vogue was initially all about.

We guess we'll know the answer when Adele's cover hits the stands, until then however, we'll take the view that this could be an unlikely fashion match made in heaven.
