Gok Wan: 90s Will 'never Be Back'

3 months ago 10th Aug 13:30

Gok Wan hopes 90s fashion is "gone forever".

The celebrity stylist is confident designers won't turn to the decade - which saw people copying the baggy pants of MC Hammer, platform trainers of the Spice Girls and lank locks of grunge bands - for inspiration as there are better fashion periods to look at.

Speaking at Gatwick Fashion Week on Saturday (08.08.09), Gok told BANG Showbiz: "Well, just the other day I saw an advert for an album and I knew all the songs on it. I started watching some of the videos of the songs, which were from the 90s, and I was thinking, 'I hope it doesn't come in.' I really hope it doesn't, so I'm going to say no. The 90s will never come back, they've gone forever."

Gok added the current trend for all things 80s, including bold colours and huge shoulder pads, will continue for the time being.

He insists the new styles will be different from the 80s revival of the last few season, but thinks the new looks could mean the industry's love affair with the decade is coming to an end.

He explained: "The reason why we've had to keep on rehashing the 80s is because we haven't got it right yet. With the 70s there was a strict routine to go through - a print and then a colour.

"The 80s was a tricky one, because it was a very, very desperate time. It was a very political, a social thing was going on in the 80s and the fashion reflected that. We haven't quite got it right yet. I think this season will probably nail it. I hope so because I'm getting bored of it now."

London Gatwick Fashion Week, held at the airport from August 6-9, gave fashion advice and tips to holidaymakers as well as promoting the benefits of duty free shopping.
