Kirsten Dunst has praised Rodarte's "inspiring" Spring/ Summer 10 collection.

The actress was seated in the front row, alongside Elijah Wood and Jason Schwartzman, for the New York Fashion Week show, which was themed around darkness and survival.

On a smoke-filled, pebble-strewn catwalk, models showcased a series of garments featuring cobweb-like leather, ribbon and lace detailing and crystal and feather adornments.

Speaking afterwards, Kirsten said: "They're incredibly inspiring, and their clothes are always inspiring."

Vera Wang opted to show away from Bryant Park, hoping her stark white store in SoHo would better offset her elegant collection.

Inspired by early 1900s designer Paul Poiret, layers of smoky tulle and sheer black organza formed loose-fitting chemise shapes and jumpsuits with embellished jewelled detailing.

Modesty was preserved with see-through styles teamed with figure-hugging bike shorts, while her metallic pieces stood stiffly away from the body.

Betsey Jonson also opted for a different venue to show off her playful, fun collection.

Shunning a traditional show in favour of a party at the plaza hotel, models clad in the designer's signature party dresses were sent to mingle with guests, rather than walk a runway, while dancing and singing to Blondie songs, covered live by singer Ida Maria.

Betsey's strapless candy-coloured dresses, blue metallic skirt suit and black sequined, frilly-skirted cocktail gown were particular hits.

Marc by Marc Jacobs dazzled the audience with clashing colours and crazy patterns - even with the menswear.

A red plaid trench coat was teamed with blue vertical striped pants rolled to the ankle on one male model, while one of the girls sported a pink and purple checked shirt, blue striped skirt, red blazer and a pink bow in her hair.
