Shoppers descended on a UK department store to buy cellulite-busting knickers yesterday (23.07.09).

The sale of Scala's Bio-Fir Anti-Cellulite underwear at John Lewis stores sparked a shopping frenzy among those desperate to rid their legs of unsightly 'orange peel' wrinkles, with some women grabbing 10 pairs at a time.

John Lewis' lingerie buyer Helen Spencer said: "This product has created a real phenomenon among women."

The £25 pants - scientifically proven to reduce cellulite - sold out within hours and soon appeared on internet auction site eBay for up to £60.

They have now become the department store's fastest-selling lingerie ever.

John Lewis has ordered another 40,000 pairs of the underwear - which also streamline your body allowing women to wear figure-hugging outfits - to meet demand.

The fabric of the fat busting knickers contains crystals which become warm when they come in contact with skin. It has been claimed the heat improves circulation in the classic problem areas - thighs, butt and stomach - and helps fat cells 'melt' into a liquid which is excreted by the liver.

The dimple decreasing pants were trialled by 50 women, who wore the knickers every day for a month. Four out of five women lost inches from their stomach, hips and thighs.

The effects lasted for up to 12 months when the participants adhered to a healthy exercise and diet regime. An impressive 82 per cent of women trialled showed a significant reduction in cellulite.

This product has created a real phenomenon among women.

The body stocking-style knickers - which nestle under the bust and stretch down to mid-thigh - first went on sale at John Lewis in May and sold out instantly, with thousands of women on waiting lists.

Many celebrities have admitted to battling unsightly cellulite-laden limbs.

Australian pop star Kylie Minogue - who loves wearing hot pants - disguises her dimpled thighs with clever lighting techniques during photo shoots.

She said: "It's there already. It's only faint, but if I squeeze my thighs I can see it.

"I get airbrushed within an inch of my life and I know where my lights should go, so I make sure they are in the right place."

Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole claims her cellulite is an inspiration to women.

She said: "I don't care if there's a picture of me with cellulite.

"I'm a young woman and, yes, I have cellulite. And if that makes someone at home go, 'Well, if Cheryl's got cellulite it's OK,' then happy days!"
