Madonna burst into tears when she posed for Dolce and Gabbana's spring campaign.
The 'Celebration' singer was photographed for the luxury fashion brand in a number of different settings, but when she had to pretend to read a letter from a loved one, the 51-year-old star was overwhelmed and started to cry.
Her friend, designer Domenico Dolce, said: "She was really crying! It wasn't fake!"
For the series of images - snapped in black and white by photographer Steven Klein - Madonna switched into a number of different characters.
She was really crying! It wasn't fake!
The advertising campaign also shows her holding a broom, peeling vegetables and eating spaghetti with her fingers.
The design duo - also consisting of Stefano Gabbana - decided to opt for an Italian-themed line and advert in celebration of their 25th year in the industry..
Dolce said: "25 years ago, when we debuted, we made our mark with a very Italian collection, and for spring we felt the time was right to go back to our roots."
While they have the utmost respect for the singer-and-actress, the pair were terrified of turning their friendship into a business deal and even allowed Madonna to make changes to the clothes she wore for the shoots.
Dolce explained to W magazine: "Strangely enough, there was a sort of fear on our behalf of asking Madonna to do anything businessy. We thought it could impact our relationship, and Madonna is one of the few people we're really in awe of."
The worldwide campaign will be launched next month.
