Nicole Richie has blasted critics for "unfairly" saying she has an eating disorder.

The socialite - who has publicly struggled with her weight over the years - has spoken out about her annoyance at those who have criticised her for having a "serious" disease.

She told Britain's Marie Claire magazine: "I felt it was a little unfair to say someone has an eating disorder when they don't. It's extremely insulting and irresponsible.

"An eating disorder is serious and it's a disease."

Instead, Nicole - who has two children, Harlow, two, and son Sparrow, four months, with boyfriend Joel Madden - claims her petite frame can make her look both smaller and larger than others.

She explained: "I think when you see me in person, you see that I'm, like, five foot one - I'm a small person. When I was heavier, everyone said I was too heavy. You can't win in the public eye and I find it really hard. So I ignore it now, I really do."

One occasion which stands out most in Nicole's mind is when she was confronted by a mother of two teenage girls, who accused her of being a bad role model by not looking after herself properly.

She explained: "The only time it bothered me was when I was in a store trying on shoes and these girls came up to me - they were probably like 13 or 14 - and their mother came over, and she said, 'Are you taking care of yourself, because my girls think that you're not.' That was upsetting."

Before she fell pregnant with Harlow, Nicole slimmed down to a tiny size zero. However, since becoming a mother she has looked far healthier.
