Oprah Winfrey will host next year's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala.

Organisers of the annual New York fashion event announced the US talk show host's part in proceedings yesterday (09.09.09), adding the theme will be 'American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity'.

The ideal of the American woman evolved from a dependence on European, Old World ideas of elegance into an independent New World sensibility that reflected freedoms still associated with American women today

The show's curator Andrew Bolton said: "The ideal of the American woman evolved from a dependence on European, Old World ideas of elegance into an independent New World sensibility that reflected freedoms still associated with American women today.

"The show will look at fashion's role in defining how American women have been represented historically, and how fashion costumes women into archetypes that still persist in varying degrees of relevance."

The event, to be held on May 3, will pay particular attention to the way fashions from 1890 to 1940 have morphed into current styles.

This year's gala had a superhero theme, and was hosted by Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake.

The night is famed for the outlandish outfits many guests don, with Madonna stunning onlookers in thigh-high boots and a tiny blue ruffled dress this year.

Kate chose a daring toga-inspired metallic dress and head piece, with Victoria Beckham opting for a polka-dot minidress.
