Even glossy style bible Vogue wrote in 1951:" Our readers dislike the bikini, which has transformed certain coastlines into the backstage of music halls and which does not embellish women."
It was only when movie icons Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Brigitte Bardot started wearing it that it became a huge success.
Now France is celebrating the anniversary with an exhibition at Les Galeries Lafayette in honour of the skimpy two piece which revolutionised fashion.
