The award-winning novelist Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) and screen writer Dean Cavanagh will premiere their first TV comedy film on Channel 4. Wedding Belles follows four life-long friends as they prepare for Leith’s wedding of the year.Set in present-day Leith, Edinburgh, Wedding Belles centres on the lives of four late twenty-something women. Shauna Macdonald (Spooks, The Descent) plays Rhona, an ex-fashion model, mourning the death of her fiancé. planning revenge on her fiance’s killer and falling into drug dependency. Shirley Henderson (A Cock and Bull Story, Frozen, Dirty Filthy Love) is Kelly, a woman battling with her demons and managing to upset all those around her. Kathleen McDermott (Morvern Caller) plays Shaz who works in an old people’s home and takes on her job very seriously – selling black-market Viagra to the residents. Michelle Gomez (Green Wing, The Book Group, Task Force) plays Amanda the bride-to-be and matriarch of the gang. She’s a successful business woman with her own beauty salon and is due to marry Joshua, an airline pilot with a very dark secret.The film follows the gang over five days as Amanda prepares for her dream wedding. These four childhood friends have raved, loved and caroused hard and are now ready to tackle adulthood head on.

But as the wedding draws nearer, their lives are thrown into turmoil with a series of hilarious, shocking and heartbreaking revelations.

Wedding Belles has been commissioned by Caroline Leddy and will be made by Junction Films. The producer is Jemma Rodgers (The League of Gentlemen, Murphy’s Law) and director Philip John (Sugar Rush, Murphy’s Law).
