Rising blood pressures are said to be part of the problem

Strokes during pregnancy and after childbirth have increased.

Elena V. Kulina, MD, PhD, a CDC epidemiologist says that the numbers have risen at an alarming rate.

Herself and colleagues compared hospital discharge information from the years 1994-95 with 2006-07.

They found approximately a 50 per cent increase in all stroke.

Kuklins says that the rising rates of high blood pressure, as well as other factors, are to blame.
