New Year’s resolutions always encourage interesting discussions, arguments and laughs, so FemaleFirst conducted a study to find out all the weird and wonderful things that people want to achieve this year, and the results were quite unpredictable.

Where women are concerned, it appears that most want to keep fit and healthy and try to be more organised. Men, however, came up with some pretty strange answers, ranging from giving up sex to dressing up as the Men in Black.

Read on to find out what you think about these enthusiasts’ resolutions.

The Girls:

'I want to learn to swim this year because I can’t believe that I’m twenty and still can’t do it. I want to have learnt in time for my summer holiday so I don’t miss out on the sea or pool anymore'. Adella Baxter, Preston.

'To travel as much as possible and whenever I have the chance, even if it is just to places in the UK, as long as I am having fun and seeing new things and learning about new cultures. I want to avoid worrying about the cost too, as it will be something that enriches my life anyway, just not materially'. Sophie Emily Scott, London.

'My mum entered me into the Manchester Great North run in May, so I need to do huge amounts of training. I am also befriending a herd of computer geeks; they are fabulous and do lots of re-enactments of video games, and have asked me to craft up some fantasy war costumes for them! Finally, my main aim for the year is to find a place to live in New York, and find myself a Mr Big!' Bethan Fearnley, University of Huddersfield.

'I want to get my priorities in order, because I spend way too much time working for the Student Union and at a hotel because I need the money. However, I'm throwing away my degree, which I’ve spent just over ten thousand pounds on. I know too many people who do this at university and fail their courses because of it, and I’m determined not to re-sit a year'. Kimberli Butler, Preston.

'My aim is to get up at 6am and listen to Radio 4 (without falling asleep) and buy newspapers every morning so that I am up-to-date with the news. I also want to read more, and make a conscious extra effort to keep in touch with friends'. Nafisa Sayani, University of Central Lancashire.

'My aim for the New Year is to eat breakfast and make my bed every morning before I leave my house, start the day on a good note!' Kirsty Louise Watkinson, Darwen.

'My New Year’s resolution is to continue developing a normal relationship with food and exercise, and maintaining that relationship'. Joanna Hill, University of Carlisle.

'My aim is to take more photographs, so I can look back and see what I have achieved and done over the year'. Stephanie Mayor, Edge Hill University.

'I’ll try to reduce my road rage!' Angela Taylor, Preston.

The Guys:

'Exercise my legs and undo the damage inflicted by years of sitting on my ass. I also want to grow and gel my hair to attract more ladies, go into town with a friend dressed as the men in black, try never be jealous, and beat up a bully'. Lewis Ormerwood, Preston.

'Reduce unnecessary time on Internet!' James Niblock, Northern Ireland.

'I’m planning to eat my own body weight in Special K.' Ken Pridham, Lancashire.

'I’m going to give up gambling in 2009, which means no more lottery or football bets. I also want to keep healthy and continue going to the gym'. Jack Johnson, Preston.

'I aim to give up drinking for 40 days...will never happen.. Simon Kushner, Manchester.

'I was going give up sex to prove a point.. Philip Boocock, Manchester.

So there you have it, some of the most unusual resolutions that people came up with for 2009. Let’s hope they stick to them, except maybe the guy who wants to give up sex!

Happy New Year!
