Manolo Blahnik gave a fan a pair of shoes so she would leave him alone.
The footwear icon - whose shoes are a favourite of Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw in 'Sex And The City' - hates being recognised in public and so took drastic attention to divert attention away from himself.
He explained: "The taxi drivers even recognise me now. Working at the New York customs there was a lady who loved my shoes. There was such a line forming behind me at passport control, I had to give her some in the end.
I never get lost for inspiration but I have to edit myself. I draw everything and then I go back and think, 'How vile, how vulgar, how horrible.'
"It's sweet but it becomes too much and I don't feel comfortable. I have never wanted to be a celebrity designer."
The Spanish-born designer - whose creations have been described as "better than sex" by Madonna - added he is often not as enamoured with his ideas as his fans are.
Manolo spends lots of time working on new pieces and is constantly striving to create new types of shoes.
He explained: "I'm still very curious about doing new things with shoes. I have a new factory now where I can play with new materials.
