Anna Wintour thinks the red carpet has become a boring "business".

American VOGUE's notorious Editor-in-Chief has lamented the demise of fashion originality at big Hollywood events and the fact celebrities are paid to wear designer gowns.

She said during a talk for students at London's Central Saint Martins school earlier this week: "The red carpet, in the United States, has become too much of a business.

"It's a fact that celebrities are paid to wear everything, and to me that sometimes comes across as very manufactured and not individual."

The 64-year-old tastemaker wishes stars would step out of their comfort zones instead of playing it safe with their gown choices.

Anna exclaimed: "[Celebrities] have all these teams of people telling them what to do, what to wear, how to do their hair, make-up.

"And they're so scared of being criticized, whereas, you know, what's wrong with looking different? How many mermaid fishtail strapless sequin [gowns] can we see?"

The magazine boss went on to slam the style choices at the Tony Awards in New York City earlier this month.

According to E! Online, she added: "I was just recently at the Tony Awards in New York, and, God, they need your help. Let me tell you, it was a disaster..."

Anna certainly knows what she's talking about since she recently topped the fashion names on Forbes' 100 Most Powerful Women list.

The artistic director of Condé Nast has been placed at number 39 overall on this year's list - two places higher than in 2013 - following her fundraising work for the Anna Wintour Costume Centre and President Obama's re-election campaign.
