New Delhi has been named in the top 25 of the world's most fashionable cities for the first time.
New York came top in the annual survery by the Global Language Monitor while Sydney leapt a staggering five spots to seventh place.
Other cities in the top 10 include the usual Rome, Paris, Milan and London
Stockholm and Cape Town also entered the top 25 for the first time while previous entrants rankers Sao Paolo and Bangkok dropped out of the list completely.
“Our yearly rankings clearly reinforce recent trends: the Big Five, New York, Rome, Paris, Milan, and London, far and away, dominate the world of fashion, especially in the eyes of the print and electronic media, as well as on Internet,” said Millie Lorenzo Payack, a director of the Global Language Monitor.
“At the same time, second tier cities in the world fashion rankings are coming on strong,” he added.
“And, by the way, money spent on media outreach can indeed, make a difference; witness Dubai,” Payack said in a statement.
The ranking was based on GLM's predictive quantities index: a proprietary algorithm that tracks words and phrases in print and electronic media, on the Internet and throughout the blogosphere. The words and phrases are tracked in relation to their frequency, contextual usage and appearance in global media outlets.
