Karl Lagerfeld is being sued by New Balance.

The designer has reportedly been hit with a lawsuit from the shoe company, which claims the veteran fashion maven has ripped off its iconic sneaker design.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, New Balance is alleging the Chanel boss' use of the capital letter 'K' on a similar black-and-white shoe design creates "confusion" with its trademark 'NB' logo.

The retail giant - which was founded in 1906 - goes on to state it has used the design since the 70s and points out that several fashion blogs have written about the similarity between the footwear, drawing particular attention to one article entitled "Wait did Karl Lagerfeld just knock off New Balance sneakers?"

This is far from the first time that major fashion labels have taken legal action over so-called rip-off footwear designs.

In 2013 Gucci lost its four-year legal battle against Guess after accusing the American brand of counterfeiting, unfair competition and trademark infringement by duplicating the Italian fashion house's logo on a line of shoes.

YSL was also forced to drop its case against stiletto king Christian Louboutin in 2012 following a fierce trademark protection battle over the right to use red soles.
