Ditch the measuring tape to find the right sized bra

Gok Wan has transformed the way women dress and he always starts with the underwear. For years he has brought light to the fact that most women aren't wearing the right size bra.

Trinny and Susannah also had their TV show which encouraged women to get rid of old underwear and buy new items which fit properly.

According to experts, the traditional method for measuring a bust size doesn't actually work because women's bodies have changed dramatically since it was invented in the 1930s.

Instead we should be trying on the different sizes in the same bra to see which fits best.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth say that they should assess each bra following the criteria below:

  • the length of the straps
  • the shape of the underwire
  • how well the back fits
  • how well the cup fits
  • and whether the front band is in contact with the breastbone

Researchers found that using the traditional method of a tape measurement, led to overestimating the back size in 76 per cent of cases and underestimating the cup size in 84 per cent.

Malcolm Ball, of the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry, told the Daily Mail: 'This research adds facts and weight to the increasing body of evidence showing that fit is dependent on personal morphology and comfort.'
