Vivienne Westwood has advised people to "eat less" food if they can't afford organic products.

The 73-year-old designer was delivering a petition to Downing Street in London - in which she expressed her concerns for the consumption of genetically modified foods - when she remarked people should simply cut down on the amount they eat in place of buying the cheaper, unhealthier alternatives.

During her passionate speech about the dangers of cheaper GM foods, Vivienne was informed by Dino Sofos from BBC Radio 5 Live that not everyone can afford to buy organic produce.

According to the Independent newspaper, she simply responded: "Eat Less".

Vivienne went on to blame the consumption of GM foods for weight gain and warned that "hell" is the only alternative if people refuse to build a greener economy.

She explained: "You've got all these processed foods, which is the main reason that people are getting fat. They're not actually good for you - they don't give you strength, they give you weight. I eat vegetables and fruit. I don't eat meat; I believe meat is bad for me... But if there was a movement to produce more organic food and less of the horrible food, then organic food would obviously be a good-value price, wouldn't it?

"We need to change to a green economy and a green world and that is easy to do. The alternative is hell."

The fashion icon also advised the public to heed what she referred to as controversial comedian Russell Brand's 'word of thumb', saying, "If the Government said it's good, then you know it's not".
