The 26-year-old musician has revealed he could "only" sleep on one side of his face when he had a head full of dreadlocks, but since he has hacked off his long tresses and opted for a shorter do he can now get the best 40 winks he has ever had.

Speaking about his new do, the 'Starboy' hitmaker said: "I could only sleep on one side of my face.

"Now, the sleep is amazing. The shower is amazing, because I don't have to spend two hours cleaning it. I didn't know how much I wanted it until I did it."

However the singer songwriter - who is currently dating supermodel Bella Hadid - has revealed the new makeover has been a "long time coming".

Although the star was urged not to get rid of his famous hair style, he felt he needed the change because it didn't "feel right".

He explained to PEOPLE: "It was a long time coming. It didn't feel right anymore.

"I told everybody I was getting rid of it, and everybody -- literally, unanimously -- they were like, 'No, don't do it! That's your whole thing, that's you.' And the way they said that, I was like, 'Oh, I'm definitely cutting it now.'"

Meanwhile, The Weeknd - whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye - has been confirmed as the new face of H&M and is set to star in the retail store's upcoming H&M Spring Icons Selected by The Weeknd campaign, which will launch on March 2 next year.

The fashion house teased the news with a string of enlarged segments of one image from the shoot, which were posted on H&M's Instagram account last week.

The posts read: "From 'The Hills' of Los Angeles, by way of Toronto... #HMSpringIcons
