Are you choosing more edgy pieces when shopping online?

Thanks to our love for online shopping, there has been something of a revolution taking place.

We've become a nation of fearless fashionistas.

Ten million Brits claim to feel bolder and more adventurous with their fashion choices when shopping online, new research by bespoke offers from Barclaycard has shown.

Over the past year two thirds of Brits have bought at least one item online that we wouldn’t have considered in-store – with two thirds of those buying an average of eight of these items annually.

The change has also brought an explosion of colour to our wardrobes, due to 44% buying brighter clothes when behind the screen.

Dawn O’Porter, supporter of Barclaycard bespoke offers, said: ''The internet makes us take more risks when it comes to fashion. In a shop, you can feel so self-conscious picking something a bit bonkers off the rail and trying it on, but shopping online takes away that embarrassment and just makes you go for it. You can mix and match in the comfort of your own home - and leave the house looking so much more exciting than if you just popped into a shop.”

When asked to name some of these bolder items, examples included a union jack suit, snake skin trousers and a pair of jeans ‘made out of 50 pairs of jeans’ – showing how we’re now far less constrained by what others may think of our fashion choices.

With 44% feeling more confident when shopping online, one in seven of us are taking it one step further by rushing to show off our new outfits with a ‘selfie’. Although, in a battle of the sexes women are leading the pack in the online outrageous fashion stakes, with more than a third choosing the bolder fashion choices, compared to only a quarter of men.

These trends are no fad either. Barclaycard spend data has shown sales of women’s clothing online this summer are up 28% compared to the same time last year. Coupled with the fact that two fifths of us are already shopping for clothes at least once a week, it seems our wardrobes are only going to get more outrageous.

David Herrick, managing director of bespoke offers, said: “It’s great to see us shunning our inhibitions and welcoming more fabulous colours into our wardrobes. The fashion world’s your oyster when you’re online - and everyone’s an individual. So whether you want a 3D T-shirt or a neon playsuit, you can take the plunge and go for it.”
