The dress made from recycled coffee capsules

Capsule wardrobes take a little bit of planning and will see you through plenty of occasions, but Nespresso have take it to a whole other level.

Ever wondered what happens to your empty coffee capsules once you’ve thrown them into the recycling bin? Are you keen to use them in a more creative way after you’ve made your perfect cup of coffee? Then look no further than premium coffee brand Nespresso, for inspiration on how to create a new ‘capsule wardrobe’.

Nespresso has now been extended into the world of fashion. To celebrate its support of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s new exhibition, The Glamour of Italian fashion 1945-2014, the brand commissioned Orsola de Castro, creative director of pioneering upcycling brand FromSomewhere, to use its recyclable capsules to create a glamorous, eco-luxury gown.

The creation of this bespoke, couture dress took de Castro and five skilled team members 200 hours to complete. 600 Nespresso capsules were used in the creation of the dress with the remainder of the gown made from upcycled materials, including end of roll obsolete stock and discarded mill waste.

Nespresso chose FromSomewhere due to their shared brand ethos of style with substance. "We relish the challenge of making beautiful pieces from the most unexpected materials and we’re really happy with the ‘recyclable capsule’ dress we’ve created." says de Castro.

“Nespresso is committed to producing a high quality product but also reducing landfill waste” explains Brema Drohan, Managing Director of Nespresso UK. “By commissioning this stunning dress, we aim to prove that just because an item is recycled, you shouldn’t have to compromise on quality. The creation of this dress proves that it is possible to successfully combine quality, design and sustainability.”

Nespresso uses aluminium for its Grand Cru capsules as it is the best material to maintain the freshness and quality that you’d expect with every cup of espresso. Using aluminum also has the advantage of being 100% recyclable and the business has a number of initiatives to engage its Club Members to take advantage of the different recycling services that it offers.
