Marilyn Monroe in the famous scene from Some Like it Hot

Marilyn Monroe and the white dress she wore in the film The Seven Year Itch has been voted the most outfit of all time.

And it’s no surprise really when hundreds of people have recreated the look all over the world.

The poll was commissioned by the BHF to mark the launch of their ‘Ramp up the Red’ campaign, which aims to fund vital research to fight heart disease.

Following closely behind the floaty white halterneck dress which famously blew up over a subway grate, were were Dorothy’s ruby slippers, worn with her gingham dress in The Wizard of Oz and Olivia Newton–John’s infamous ‘come –back’ outfit in Grease of black leather trousers, red mules and red lips came in at number three.

Racy red tones were seen to be a key shade to create an impression – with the Baywatch red swimming costume, Michael Jackson’s red leather Thriller suit and animated siren Jessica Rabbit’s long plunging red evening gown all making it into the top rated get-ups as seen on screen.

It is possibly no surprise that red featured heavily in the top ten, with over half of those polled stating that red was the colour they found the sexiest and close to a third saying that they would choose a red item of clothing if they wanted to feel confident and sexy.

On the first Friday of the month, 7th February, the BHF is asking the British public to Ramp up the Red and fundraise by wearing red make up, red clothing or throwing a red party to join the fight against coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer.

Hilary Alexander, OBE and former Fashion Director of The Daily Telegraph, is supporting the campaign. She commented: “The poll shows that the colour red is key when it comes to making an enduring style statement, whether it’s a flash of red lipstick or a scarlet evening gown. The most iconic outfits date back over 100 years and it is clear that red has always been a traffic-stopping colour that grabs people’s attention and keeps outfits front of mind.

She added: “I will be ramping up the red on the 7th February and showing heart disease the red light. It is a cause that is very close to me as I had open heart surgery a few years ago. Every pound raised will go towards the fight for every heartbeat to help people like me. Join me by rallying your friends and colleagues and Ramping up the Red for the BHF.”

Polly Shute, Fundraising Project Director at the BHF, said: “Red is not only a fabulous colour to make you stand out from the crowd but you will also be helping a great cause. By ramping up the red on the 7th February with friends and colleagues, not only will you have the chance to be a style icon for a day but you will be helping to raise vital funds that will help the BHF continue its vital research, support and care for those living with heart disease.”

Ramp up the Red this February and help the BHF continue its fight for every heartbeat. To order your FREE fundraising pack, visit bhf.org.uk/red or call 0800 0316 316 to sign up today.
