Women are suffering more than men, with 38 per cent of women saying their best sex was with an ex compared to only 29 per cent of men.
The research comes from Lovehoney, the biggest online sex toy retailer, and shows that we don’t all marry for good sex.
Tracey Cox, sex expert who has her own range with Lovehoney, says, “The ‘grass is greener’ sexual syndrome isn’t new. Women don’t tend to marry the guy they had great sex with. They marry for more ‘sensible’ attributes - like whether he’ll be loyal and a good father.
“I get lots of emails from women saying they love their husbands but fantasise about sex with their exes. They don’t regret not choosing them as long-term mates, but they do miss the great sex they had.”
Encouragingly, this means that 62 per cent of woman and 71 per cent of men say that the best sex they’ve had is with their current partner.
Lovehoney believe that this is due to a demand from women to have better sex, speaking up when they are not satisfied.
They believe that this may be due to the Fifty Shades Of Grey phenomenon that hit earlier this year.
Tracey says, “I find these results incredibly encouraging with 62% of women and 71% of men saying their best sex was with their current partner. That means we’re becoming more explorative, communicating our needs better and generally enjoying sex more.
“Books like Fifty Shades Of Grey help create a healthy sexual environment where women realise to have good sex, you need novelty and ‘edge’. It’s not all about sex on Saturday night in the missionary position!”
The research shows that people believe that love makes for great sex, with 44 per cent of women and 41 per cent of men saying that was what made their best sexual experience great.
Despite Fifty Shades empowering women to get what they want in the bedroom, it was men that were more inclined to try something different, like light bondage, with 26 per cent saying experimenting made their best sex amazing compared to only 17 per cent of women.
Another surprising fact is that women aren’t as fussed about Sex Toys as men! Twenty five per cent of men believe them to be important compared to 14 per cent of women.
