London may be the most expensive place in the UK to live, but it proves the most cost effective for students, according to a new survey.
Accordng to the survey, the average student can live in London for £243 per week - Making it one of the most expensive places to stay. However, the average student there earns £150 per week.
By Contrast, the Cheapest university town is St Andrews, the choice of Prince William, but the average student, there earns just £63 per week. Meaning that the student has to find an extra £34 per week, compared to London.
One reason, according to the survey could be that the Capital offers more work opportunities in retail, bar work and marketing - Students top choices. Another is that the average hourly wage for London is over £8 per hour, compared with £6 in the rest of the UK.
The survey, by the Royal Bank of Scotland, which questioned nearly 3,000 students, found that 40 per cent worked for an average of 16 hours a week during term time, a proportion that has risen steadily and is expected to rise more sharply when annual tuition fees go up next year to £3,000.
Of the remainder, 30 per cent took jobs during the holidays, and 36 per cent said their parents helped them out so that they could concentrate on their studies.
On average, students spent £195 a week on living costs, including £74 a week on rent, £21 on food shopping and about the same amount on music, DVDs and going out.
