For the third time in 12 months, British Gas has increased it's prices, leaving millions struggling to pay.
the DTI is urging consumers to shop around for their Gas, as the company adds another 12% to it's gas prices for 16 million customers. That means customers will now be paying, on average, an extra £300, compared to last years prices, and 22% more than other companies offering the same service.
According to some opposition parties, the increases will make this coming winter, the most expensive winter on record, and may families, and elderly people will face hardship.
A spokeswoman for the DTI said: 'You should consider switching suppliers, especially if you have never tried switching before,'
'The Government understands the difficulties that this rise in prices will cause to households and businesses. We are doing everything we can to offset the impact.'
British Gas said it needed to raise prices because it made a £143m loss in the first half of the year. This was rejected by consumer groups which said the increases were impossible to justify when parent company Centrica made £692m profit in six months.
