Women are most likely to be the one that controlls the finances at home, according to research from mortgage company, first active.

But according to the same research, most women don't know how much their monthly mortgage repayments are. Only 36% of women know the precise figure they will pay for their morgage each month, whilst 75% of men claim to know the figure exactly, every month.

"Whatever type of person you are, your mortgage is usually the largest monthly outgoing. So it’s the first place people should start when they are looking to save money," said David Jones, managing director at First Active.

"It’s a good idea to remind yourself how much you are paying now or will be paying when your initial deal runs out and look around for a more competitive deal."

The First Active research also reveals that 44 per cent of women say their money situation is not quite playing out as they hoped it would, while just half this number thinks they have their finances under control.
