Apparently, us Brits can't avoid high prices simply by leaving the country. According to a recent survey, the UK's mobile users are hit by the highest charges in Europe when they try to call home from abroad.

Mobile operators massively increase the cost of calling when the phone is used with a roaming package from another country. On average, the cost of a 4 minute call home to the UK from Italy would be £3.99.

The cost of receiving a call from the UK is even more harsh. An average of £3.71 to receive a call from home, if you're holidaying in Spain, compared to the price of just £1.49 if you're from Germany, and 96p if you're from France

Viviane Reding, information commissioner in Brussels, said: 'At a time when we have seen in Europe so much progress in other telecommunications services, the cost of using your mobile phone abroad is hard to believe.

In Britain, Ofcom is already investigating the roaming charges. It is also looking at the prices UK operators such as Vodafone, 02, Orange and T-Mobile charge foreigners for using their phones in the UK.
