The majority of UK drivers have given the thumbs down to proposed new motorway toll lanes according to a new survey by Motorpoint.

The poll by the UK car supermarket found that over 55% of motorists would not pay to use proposed motorway toll lanes in spite of the fact that motorway congestion is currently costing the country around £20bn a year according to the AA. Over 1,300 people took part in the study.

The Government is currently spending some £6bn over the next few years on a programme of measures designed to ease congestion, support economic growth and improve road safety on Britain’s roads. As part of its plans, it is seriously considering introducing toll and car-sharing lanes, similar to those already in place in America.

Says Paul Winfield, Operations Director of Motorpoint: "While congestion is clearly a bane of many people’s lives, it is clear from this poll, that UK drivers don’t believe the introduction of motorway toll lanes is the answer. I think it is a case of back to the drawing board for the Government."

Quite possibly. However I gladly pay the quite extortionate price of £4.50 toll on the M6 in Birmingham for one reason alone. It is quite. As a result there is never any traffic hold ups, no congestion resulting in a very pleasant peaceful drive.

That is why paying for a toll road is worth every penny.
