It is not unusual to see higher mileage cars entered for sale at auction, but the Ford Mondeo Estate in silver recently offered and sold by British Car Auctions (BCA) was an exceptional example.

The 2004-registered car had covered over half a million miles in the last five years - equivalent to a trip to the moon and back (238,000 miles each way), plus two and quarter trips around the equator (56,000 miles).  The average mileage of a five year old car sold by BCA is around 60,000 miles.

The 2004 04 Ford Mondeo Estate diesel was the highest mileage car BCA has seen in recent times and despite averaging over 100,000 miles a year, it sold for an amazing £825 following some fierce bidding.

BCA spokesman Tim Naylor commented "Clearly this Mondeo Estate model generated a huge level of interest, even when accounting for the very strong demand for used cars over recent months."

He added "The fact this car remained highly desirable to potential buyers after half a million miles is testament to the build quality of modern cars and the long-term reliability of the current generation of diesel engines."
