The clocks went back this weekend signifying the arrival of winter but it would seem that the majority of UK motorists would not be preparing their vehicles adequately according to a new survey by GEM Motoring Assist.

The survey that talked to drivers of all ages, revealed that few carry more than an ice scraper or can of de-icer when it comes to winter driving. And whilst 8 out of 10 have at least one of these handy items for icy starts, it seems that many drivers do not consider what might be helpful for possible icy stops.

A shocking three quarters of drivers admitted they were not prepared for the winter months. It was the youngest drivers surveyed who were the worst offenders with not one person in the 17-25 year age group who responded taking any specific steps to prepare their car for winter.

GEM’s survey also revealed that only three in ten carry a torch, two in 10 carry jump leads and only just over a quarter carry spare water for topping up washer fluid. This fact is somewhat surprising since it is actually against the law to have dirty windows and for your washer fluid to be empty. Useful items such as blankets, high-energy foods and towropes featured on few priority lists.

It comes as no surprise then, that nearly 40% of those surveyed reported having a bad experience, and more than 50% admitted to feeling more nervous whilst driving in winter.

And there’s us complaining about the wrong type of snow delaying the train or the wrong type of leaves cluttering up the tracks!
