Young women aged 18-24 are least likely to have roadside breakdown cover to help them get mobile again this winter. RAC data shows that with four in 10 (40%) risk being stranded at the roadside.

The study reveals that confusion over pricing and increasing financial pressures are causing many motorists to abandon cover and chance spending hours stranded, an experience, which is already widespread among British motorists.

Over a third (35%) of all drivers have experienced breaking down without cover - and over one in ten (12%) of these have taken over four hours to reach their destination as a result.

The research also found that the most common rescuers are the motorist’s own family, used as a first port of call by almost half (48%) of stricken motorists. Young people are especially likely to rely on help from others, with 35% of 18-35 year olds gambling on driving without cover, compared with only 21% of over 55s.

Motorists also wildly overestimate the cost of breakdown cover. Nearly three quarters (76%) of motorists surveyed were unaware that roadside assistance is available for under £40 a year - and over one in 10 (11%) think it costs over £100. This inaccuracy is compounded by the economic situation, with over a third (35%) of motorists without cover citing financial pressures as their primary reason for not having it.

Believe me girls, you do not want to go through this palaver. Get yourselves covered.
