12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave

12 Years A Slave is a movie that we had been looking forward to for some time: mainly because we are huge fans of director Steve McQueen here at FemaleFirst.

And I am so thrilled to say that this movie did not disappoint when we were treated to a screening of it at the BFI London Film Festival.

Sadly, 12 Years A Slave will not be hitting the big screen until January - but it is already a contender for Best Film of 2014.

So we have a couple of fantastic clips from the film for you to take a look at:

The movie is based on the incredible true story of Solomon Northup: a free man who was sold into slavery. After his slavery ordeal Northup wrote a book about his experiences.

Chiwetel Ejiofor will take on that central role in what is a devastating performance from the British actor.

He is joined on the cast list by Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Giamatti and Benedict Cumberbatch.

In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.

Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity.

In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Pitt) forever alters his life.

12 Years a slave is a powerful movie - believe me it will stay with you long after you have left the cinema - about one man's unbreakable spirit.

The film is a terrific watch and is set to be a major contender in just about every category at the Oscars early next year.

12 Years A Slave is released 10th January 2014. Read our 12 Years A Slave London Film Festival review.
