Swedish actors and actresses are continuously making their mark in the film and television industry and here we’re taking a look at some of the biggest and best.

Max von Sydow

Max von Sydow is one of the most accomplished Swedish actors in the business. He has played countless lead roles in some of the most popular films ever made, amongst which are The Exorcist, Minority Report and Shutter Island. He has also made TV appearances, most notably in the popular period drama, The Tudors.

Sydow was born in Lund, Sweden on 10 April 1929.

Noomi Rapace

Noomi Rapace is most well-known for her role in the film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s, 'Millennium Trilogy' (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest).

She recently starred in the Sherlock Holmes sequel, A Game of Shadows, as well as Ridley Scott’s, Prometheus, which is scheduled for release this summer.

Noomi was born on 28 December 1979 (1979-12-28) in Hudiksvall, Sweden, and began her acting career in 1988. She has worked in TV as well as film.

Joel Kinnaman

This actor is probably best known for his recurring part in the American version of The Killing (the original was Danish), in which he played Stephen Holder, an apprentice homicide detective.

But Joel Kinnaman has also starred in a number of high-profile movies and is fast becoming a Hollywood favourite. He took the lead role in the Swedish hit, Snabba Cash (Dirty Money), and was recently seen, albeit briefly, in David Fincher’s remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In addition, he scored a part in the up and coming film, Safe House, alongside Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds.

The actor was born in Stockholm, Sweden on 25 November 1979(1979-11-25). His mother is a native of the country whilst his father is American. 

 

Malin Akerman

Many people may think that Malin Akerman is American, but surprisingly, she’s actually Swedish-Canadian. The 33 year old was born in Stockholm on May 12, 1978, but moved to Canada a few years later.

Before finding her place in film in 2007 (The Heartbreak Kid), Akerman’s careers were in modelling and television. Since then she has fulfilled roles in several other major motion pictures, including the rom-coms 27 Dresses, The Proposal and Couples Retreat, as well as Zach Snyder’s comic book-based movie, Watchmen.

Stellan Skarsgård    

Stellan Skarsgård has featured in a number of famous films; his most recent appearances being in 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Thor and Melancholia. He can also be recognised in the two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels as 'Bootstrap' Bill Turner and in Mamma Mia.

The actor was born on 13 June 1951 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Alexander Skarsgård

Alexander Skarsgård is the oldest son of Stellan Skarsgård and it certainly shows. The young actor is following in his father’s footsteps and has already earned himself a positive reputation in the industry. Apart from being in Melancholia alongside his dad, Alexander regularly appears in the hit HBO TV series, True Blood.

The actor was born in Stockholm on 25 August 1976.
