Amanda Seyfried in Red Riding Hood

Amanda Seyfried in Red Riding Hood

Amanda Seyfried has enjoyed major box office success in recent years and is back on the big screen this week with Red Riding Hood.

The movie sees on of the most popular young actresses currently working in Hollywood team up with Catherine Hardwicke - who is making her first movie since Twilight.

She kicked off her career, as so many do, in 2000 in TV as an extra in Guiding Light before moving on to As The World Turns  and All My Children.

And it wasn't long before the movie industry came calling as she made her big screen debut in 2004 in the role of Karen Smith in hit Mean Girls.

The movie also starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, who were also trying to forge a career for themselves, and topped the U.S. box office when it was released.

Over the next couple of years she went on to appear in Nine Live, American Gun and Alpha Dog as she mixed and matched her roles.

But it was a certain musical, yes I'm talking about Mamma Mia, that really launched her career back in 2008.

Mamma Mia follows independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Seyfried), the spirited daughter she’s raised alone.

For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski) from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier.

Despite mixed reviews the movie was a massive success and went on to become the highest grossing movie at the UK box office since Titanic.

With Mamma Mia under her belt Seyfried saw her career soar and she has worked non-stop over the last two years.

Jennifer's Body is the only blip on her record, I mean what was she thinking when she agreed to this? The Diablo Cody written movie didn't fair well with the critics and struggled at the box office, taking just $32.8 million.

But 2010 has been a much better year for the actress as she teamed up with Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore for Chloe.

A doctor hires an escort to seduce her husband, whom she suspects of cheating, though unforeseen events put the family in danger.

After demonstrating that she wasn't just able to do popcorn movies she moved back into the mainstream with Dear John, which saw her work alongside Channing Tatum.

An adaptation of Nicholas Sparks's novel of the same name the movie follows a soldier who falls for a conservative college student while he's home on leave.

Dear John was the movie that toppled Avatar from the top of the U.S. box office as it opened at number one earlier this year.

Red Riding Hood is the first movie for the actress since Letter To Juliet and is a new spin on an old, and popular, tale.

For decades, the people of the village of Daggerhorn have maintained an uneasy truce with the werewolf, who prowls at every full moon, by offering the beast a monthly animal sacrifice to quench its appetite.

But under a blood red moon, the wolf changes the stakes by taking the life of one of their own.

The victim is the older sister of Valerie, a beautiful, young woman, who has just found out that her parents have arranged for her to marry Henry, the scion of the town's wealthiest family.

But Valerie wants only Peter, the poor woodcutter she has loved all her life. Unwilling to be parted, the couple was planning to run away together, but, in a horrifying instant, the wolf changes everything.

Seyfried has already completed work on Now, which also stars Olivia Wilde and Alex Pettyfer.

And she is currently filming a project by Mark Webber.

Red Riding Hood is released 15th April
