There was also another award for Brit actress Sally Hawkins as she scooped the gong for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and could be a serious threat at next month's Oscars. But Happy Go Lucky lost out to Vicky, Cristina Barcelona in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category.

Mickey Rourke ended Sean Penn's run of Best Actor awards as he scooped the prize for his comeback role in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, Best Original Song also went to the film for Bruce Springsteen.

The Globes honoured Heath Ledger with a posthumous Best Supporting Actor gong which was collected on his behalf by The Dark Knight's director Christopher Nolan who said that he would be "eternally missed but never forgotten".

He went on to say: "All of us who worked with Heath accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride."

Wall-E won Best Animated Feature, beating off competition for Kung Fu Panda and Bolt, while Waltz with Bashir won Best Foreign Language Film.

However there were snubs for The Curious Case of Benjamin, Doubt, Frost/Nixon were all snubbed, despite having five nominations each. There were also no gongs for political drama Milk, which only managed one nomination for Sean Penn.

The Golden Globes is considered a strong indication as to which movies will win what at next month's Oscars, and so far it's looking great for the Brits.
