British stars ruled the Golden Globes last night as Kate Winslet finally got her moment of glory scooping two awards Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

This year saw the actress earn her sixth and seventh Golden Globe Award nominations, having never won in the past, scooping the best supporting actress gong for her role in the controversial Holocaust drama The Reader.

Her second win, for Best Actress, came for her performance in Revolutionary Road, in which she is reunited with Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. The win came as a surprise after the organisers of the awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, identified Anne Hathaway at the winner.

Fighting back tears she was left almost speechless as she apologised to her fellow nominees: "I'm so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin - and who's the other one? Angelina.. Now forgive me, is this really happening?"

She went on to co-star DiCaprio: "I have loved you with all my heart," Winslet said, before thanking her husband for directing the film - "Thank you for killing us every single day. I loved every second of working with you."

More British success came in the form of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle's movie that has dominated the award's circuit over recent weeks, as it picked up four awards, including Best Motion Picture Drama.

The rags to riches story that follows a young boy from the street of Mumbai onto Who Wants to be a Millionaire also earnt Danny Boyle his first Best Director Golden Globe, as well as collecting Best Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy and Best original Score for AR Rahman.

There was also another award for Brit actress Sally Hawkins as she scooped the gong for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and could be a serious threat at next month's Oscars. But Happy Go Lucky lost out to Vicky, Cristina Barcelona in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category.

Mickey Rourke ended Sean Penn's run of Best Actor awards as he scooped the prize for his comeback role in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, Best Original Song also went to the film for Bruce Springsteen.

The Globes honoured Heath Ledger with a posthumous Best Supporting Actor gong which was collected on his behalf by The Dark Knight's director Christopher Nolan who said that he would be "eternally missed but never forgotten".

He went on to say: "All of us who worked with Heath accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride."

Wall-E won Best Animated Feature, beating off competition for Kung Fu Panda and Bolt, while Waltz with Bashir won Best Foreign Language Film.

However there were snubs for The Curious Case of Benjamin, Doubt, Frost/Nixon were all snubbed, despite having five nominations each. There were also no gongs for political drama Milk, which only managed one nomination for Sean Penn.

The Golden Globes is considered a strong indication as to which movies will win what at next month's Oscars, and so far it's looking great for the Brits.
