Slumdog Millionaire has enjoyed further award success scooping three London Film Critics' Circle Awards, including Best British Film.
Danny Boyle was also named British director of the year and Simon Beaufoy collected yet another gong for his screenplay. But it was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button filmmaker David Fincher that won Best Director.
The film, which follows a poor Indian boy who competes on Who Wants to be a Millionaire has enjoyed major success this awards season scooping Best Picture Drama at the Golden Globes as well as being nominated for ten Oscars.
However the big surprise of the night was a Best Picture win for The Wrestler, despite being critically and commercially acclaimed the film hasn't featured heavily at the award ceremonies over recent weeks.
The film's leading man Mickey Rourke followed up his Golden Globe success by also winning the Actor of the Year, making the hunt for the Oscar a real two horse race with Sean Penn. Michael Fassbender was awarded Best British Actor of the Year for his role in Steve McQueen's Hunger.
There was further success for Brit Kate Winslet as she won Best Actress of the year for her performances in The Reader and Revolutionary Road, further strengthening her chances of winning her first Best Actress Oscar later this month.
However British Actress of the Year was awarded to Kristen Scott Thomas for her role in I've Loved You So Long, following up her Best European Actress Award and Golden Globe nomination.
There was only one gong for Brit comedy Happy Go Lucky, which really has been the star of the American award circuit, as Eddie Marsan was awarded British Actor in a Supporting Role.
British Actress in a Supporting Role went to Tilda Swinton for her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Steve McQueen also picked up Breakthrough British Film-Maker for Hunger.
