Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch really made a name for himself last year when he took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in the new BBC adaptation and he is set to return to the big screen this week.

Yes he joins an all star British cast in Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy and he is a talented that we should all be excited about and keeping an eye on.

After studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art the actor kicked off his career in the theatre in 2001, working in plays and theatres all over the country, including the West End.

As you may expect it wasn't long before TV and movies came calling - and he is now one of the most in demand actors.

He kicked off his TV career in the likes of Heartbeat and Silent Witness before going on to Cambridge Spies.

But it was for his role as Stephen Hawking in Hawking, which looked at his early years at Cambridge University, that he gained some critical and award recognition as he was nominated for a Best actor Bafta.

He made his feature film debut in 2003 with To Kill a King before going on to Starter for 10, an adaptation of the David Nicholls novel, Amazing Grace and Atonement.

For Amazing Grace the actor was nominated for Best British Breakthrough at the London Film Critics Circle.

The Other Boleyn Girl and Creation followed in 2008 and 2009 but it was a role back on the small screen that was to give him his major breakthrough.

Of course I am talking about Sherlock Holmes, in which he starred alongside Martin Freeman as Watson.

The series was created by writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and was a huge success when it hit TV screens last year.

The series is a contemporary adaptation of the novels by Arthur Conan Doyle and is set in modern day London.

The first season went on to win the Best Drama Series Bafta and a second series will hit the big screen next year.

But it is now Cumberbatch's big screen career that is getting rather tasty - and it all starts this week with Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy - an adaptation of the John Le Carre novel.

Cumberbatach joins an all star British cast that includes Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy and Mark Strong in what is being called the best Brit movie in many a year.

And the movie work doesn't stop there as he has already completed work on Wreckers and War Horse.

War Horse is the latest movie project from Steven Spielberg and sees him star alongside Tom Hiddleston, David Thewlis and Emily Watson.

The actor has also been cast in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, which has been split into two movies, as Smaug.

The movie will see him work once again alongside Martin Freeman as he has landed the role of Bilbo Baggins.

Between his TV and movie projects Cumberbatch is set to be a busy boy throughout 2012 and his star looks set to rise even further.

Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy is released 16th September
