Best Fantasy Films: The Lord of the Rings

3 months ago 16th Aug 10:50

So many people said that The Lord of the Rings novels by JRR Tolkien could never be adapted for the big screen but Peter Jackson proved everyone wrong also quashing criticism that shooting them back to back was also impossible.

Instead of a disaster Jackson and co brought to the big screen three of the best movies of all time, one of the most successful franchises and The Return of the King is one of the best fantasy movies.

While The Lord of the Rings might be a bit of an obvious choice it truely is a landmark in cinema history and Return of the King mixed stunning battle sequences, great special effects with excellent cast performances as the trilogy was the must see movie for this Christmases in a row.

Following on from the successes of Fellowship of the Ring and The two Towers weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis), the two-faced former owner of the Ring that Frodo must destroy in the fires of Mount Doom.

Meanwhile Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) contend with the deranged ruler Denethor (John Noble) at the once-mighty city of Minas Tirith, as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) joins Éowyn (Miranda Otto) and the Riders of Rohan to hold back the forces of Sauron.

Amidst the chaos, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) must rise to his destiny, aided by Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in assembling allies for a massive battle that will decide the fate of Middle-earth.

While the splended viual effects and battle scenes really do take centre stage, which really had to be seen in the big screen, it's the courage of the central characters that really are the heart of the film.
