The fourth biggest franchise of all time is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is a series of movies that have been independently produced by Marvel Studios.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise kicked off back in 2008 when Iron man blasted onto the big screen for the very first time.

Robert Downey Jr was cast as Tony Stark aka Iron Man and the franchise has never really looked back as the movie stormed to success.

Downey Jr's performance in this role really seems to have struck a chord with movie goers and he is one of the biggest names in this entire franchise as he resurrected his career with this character.

Since then a series of films has followed including The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2. Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.

But the biggest success in this franchise to date came this summer when some of cinema's biggest names came together to form Avengers Assemble.

Talk of an Avengers movie has been rife ever since Iron Man hit the big screen and with Joss Whedon at the helm it was a massive success.

The movie took in excess of $1.5 billion to make not only the biggest movie of 2012 but the third biggest movies of all time.

And this is a franchise that will be enjoying more success as Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World will both hit the big screen next year.

Filming on Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to begin at the beginning of next year and a second Avengers movie is in the pipeline.
