The musical makes a triumphant return to the big screen this week as we finally get to see Les Misérables.

The movie sees the return of Tom Hooper to the director's chair while Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway are all set to star.

We have been treated to some cracking musicals over the years and we take a look at some of the best.

- The Sound of Music

When you think of musicals The Sound of Music is one that immediately springs to mind and it was released back in 1965.

The film was based on the Broadway musical of the same name and saw Robert Wise in the director's chair.

It remains one of Julie Andrews' greatest roles as she plays central character Maria - a nun who falls in love with the father she is the governess of.

The film went on to win the Best Picture Oscar and it is a movie that seems to grow in popularity year on year with the sing-a-long craze.

It's great songs and rousing score make The Sound of Music one of the best and most enduring musicals.

- The Wizard of Oz

'Follow the yellow brick road' were word uttered for the first time in 1939 as The Wizard of Oz burst onto the big screen.

A mix of black and white and colour the movie was a visual treat as much as a musical one as it transported audiences to a different world - not to mention introduced us to a wide range of characters.

Judy Garland starred as Dorothy in what was to be her most iconic role and it remains one of her greatest on-screen performances.

The movie may not have been a huge hit when it was first released but audiences have come to love it over the last seventy years and it remains one of the greatest movies of all time.

- Grease

In the late seventies and early eighties there was no bigger star on the big screen than John Travolta and Grease was just one of the roles that helped launch his career.

Teaming up with Olivia Newton John they brought to life the characters of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen in one of the most popular musicals of all time.

The film was based on the stage musical of the same name and saw Randal Kleiser in the director's chair.

This movie brought the story and the music to a whole new audience and the soundtrack is one of the biggest selling of all time.

Grease was a movie that helped define an era and it is a movie that is as popular today as it was when it was first released.

- Singin' In The Rain

When you think of musicals you automatically think of Gene Kelly singing and dancing in the rain - which is one of the most iconic scenes of all time.

Singin' In The Rain was in the director's chair for the project as well as on the cast list - this was only his second directorial outing.

The movie teamed him up with Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds in a movie that was about the transition from silent films to talkies.

Singin' In The Rain was a modest hit when it was first released and it is only with the passage of time that it has become the much loved and respected musical that it is now.

- West Side Story

West Side Story had been playing on Broadway for four year by the time the movie was released in 1961 and the filmed only added to its popularity.

Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins West Side Story contains some of the best music of all of the musicals to ever grace the big screen - not to mention a fantastic love story.

This is a modern day take on Romeo and Juliet and it saw Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn and Rita Moreno all on the cast list.

The film was a critical and box office smash when it was released and it went on to win ten Oscars including Best Picture.

- My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady hit the big screen back in 1964 and was an adaptation of the stage show.

Julie Andrews had made the role of Eliza Doolittle her own on stage and she was expected to land the role when it was announced that the film was going to go ahead - the role instead when to Audrey Hepburn.

She gives an incredibly charming central performance and her chemistry with Rex Harrison is simply fantastic.

The movie was a triumph when it was released and went on to win eight Oscars including Best Picture.
