Blockbusters have had mixed success at the Oscars over the years but every so often a movie comes along that wins the Academy over.

There is already a huge debate raging to which blockbuster films may feature in the Oscar line up this year - Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey all possible Best Picture contenders.

So we take a look at some of the blockbusters that have had Oscar success.

After years of blockbuster Oscar success drought Titanic came along in 1997 and blew all of the competition out of the water.

James Cameron was at the helm of the movie that gained fourteen nominations and went home with eleven - equalling the record set by Ben Hur.

Best Picture and Best Director went the way of the movie but Kate Winslet missed out on the Best Actress award.

The Lord of the Rings movie all picked up Best Picture nominations but it was The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King that really brought the awards home.

The movie was nominated for eleven Oscars and it won in every category it was nominated - including Best Picture and Best Director for Peter Jackson.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was the last blockbuster movie to win the Best Picture Oscar and only two blockbuster movies have been nominated in this category since; Avatar and Inception.

Avatar may be the biggest grossing movie of all time with over $2 billion at the box office but that was not enough to see it win the Best Picture Oscar - despite it being a major favourite.

It lost Best Picture and Best Director to The Hurt Locker and Kathryn Bigelow.

Avatar was nominated for nine Oscars and walked away with Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Ben Hur was the blockbuster of its day when it was released back in 1959 - starring Charlton Heston and directed by Williams Wyler.

The movie bagged twelve Oscar nominations and waltzed away with eleven including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The only category that she didn't win was Best Adapted Screenplay.

Some of the biggest blockbusters of the seventies and eighties such as Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark were all nominated for Best Picture but they all missed out.

The blockbuster has struggled for many years to get the Oscar success that it deserves - with the likes of The Dark Knight being overlooked in recent years.

While we may see some movies such as Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey get a nod it is set to be some time before we see a blockbuster really dominate the Oscars once again.

The Oscar nominations are announced 10th January
