James McAvoy in Trance

James McAvoy in Trance

There are some incredibly exciting movies set to hit the big screen over the next twelve months with some great performances also heading our way.

And of those performances there is some fantastic British talent to keep and eye on as some of our biggest names are set to star in some really high profile projects.

So we have taken a look at some of the British stars that will on show this year and the movies they will be starring in.

James McAvoy

It has been a while since we have seen James McAvoy on the big screen but throughout 2013 we are going to be seeing plenty of him.

Trance is one of his early projects as he teams up with Oscar winning filmmaker Danny Boyle.

This crime thriller sees McAvoy star alongside Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel and follows a fine art auctioneer who gets mixed up with a criminal gang, who join forces with a hypnotherapist to recover a lost painting.

Welcome To The Punch, Filth and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers are some of his other projects.

He is also set to reprise the role of Charles Xavier as filming on X-Men: Days of Future Past will get under way.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor to well and truly keep and eye on this year as he star continues to climb.

His biggest project of the year sees him step into the blockbuster as he is one of the new faces in Star Trek Into Darkness.

J.J. Abrams is back in the director's chair and the movie sees Cumberbatch take on the role of John Harrison. There is still some mystery surrounding this role as Harrison is a character who does not appear in the original series.

He has also completed work on August: Osage County and Twelve Years A Slave, which is the new movie from director Steve McQueen.

Cumberbatch will also be returning to Middle Earth where he will take on the role of Smaug in the second film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill's star is only going one way this year and that is up as he is set to play Superman this summer.

Man of Steel is the first Superman movie to hit the big screen since 2006 and sees the Superman franchise rebooted by director Zack Snyder.

This is the biggest role of Cavill's career to date as he teams up with Russell Crowe, Amy Adams and Kevin Costner.

Man of Steel is set to be one of the biggest movies of the summer and could be the role that Cavill needs to propel him onto the A-list.

The Great Wall is also on the pipeline for Cavill and filming on that should get underway this year.

Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is one of the most exciting young actresses produced by this country in a long time and this year she is back.

We haven't seen her in a movie since Shame at the beginning of 2012 but she is set to star in The Great Gatsby this spring.

The film sees her team up with director Baz Luhrmann for the first time while Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton are on the cast list.

The Great Gatsby is an adaptation of the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald and it promises to be one of the most stylish and visually stunning film of 2013.

She is also set to star in Inside Llewyn Davis which is the latest film from Ethan and Joel Coen.

Idris Elba

We love Idris Elba here at FemaleFirst and we are going to be seeing plenty of him this year as he a couple of very high profile projects in the pipeline.

He will be reprising the role of Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World as he reunites with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.

This time around Alan Taylor is in the director's chair while events of the film follow on from what happened in Avengers Assemble.

And one blockbuster is not enough for Elba this year as he is also set to star in Pacific Rim - the new movie for director Guillermo del Toro.

The sci-fi film sees him star alongside Charlie Hunnam and Rom Perlman and follows the human race as they try to fight of an alien attack.

He has also completed work on They Die By Dawn, No Good Deen and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom - in which he will play Nelson Mandela.

Gemma Arterton

2012 was a quiet year for Arterton in terms of releasing movies but she was busy filming a whole host of projects that will be hitting the big screen this year.

Song For Marion is one of the first films we will be seeing her in as she plays a leader of a choir for older people.

Directed by Paul Andrew Williams the movie also stars Christopher Eccleston, Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp.

She swaps drama for action with Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters as the film is a new take on the popular tale. Set years after the original story the siblings are now on the hunt for witches.

Arterton has also completed work on Runner, Runner while Byzantium is set to be released later this year.

And she has another busy filming year ahead of her as Mystery White Boy, Absolutely Anything and Crooked House are in the pipeline.

Christopher Eccleston, David Oyelowo, Tom Hiddleston and Keira Knightley are other actors who also have a series of projects in the pipeline this year.
