Can Golden Globes Predict The Oscars?

After Sunday night's Golden Globe success for a string of British talent, including Kate Winslet at long last, just how much of an indication were the results when it comes to predicting who will scoop the Oscars next month?

First of all before last night there was no real runaway favourite when it came to the big awards with a string of films and actor sharing awards over the last few weeks; including Sally Hawkins and Happy Go Lucky, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk and Anne Hathaway.

Perhaps the only serial award winner was Sean Penn for his role as politician Harvey Milk in Milk but his failure to scoop the Golden Globe now turns the Best Actor Oscar into a two horse race between him and Mickey Rourke for his role in The Wrestler, which is resurrecting his career.

But when it comes to the Oscars the Best Actor/Actress in a Motion Picture Drama and Best Actor/Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy categories at the Golden Globes will find themselves condensed into Best Actor and Best Actress.

Winslet's double now sees her a favourite and bookies odds for her to at long last get her hands on an Oscar have been slashed, although the likely hood of her doing the double are very slim.

From a British perspective Winslet could see her strongest competition from Sally Hawkins who picked but Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role as Poppy in Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky.

This role has propelled Hawkins to stardom in American as the always look on the bright side character Poppy has won over the critics and has a string of awards for her performance. But Winslet is definitely the one to beat now.
