Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival

It doesn't seem five minutes since we were all sunning ourselves in the south of France at last year's Cannes Film Festival and it's almost upon us again.

Twelve months ago we all enjoyed the over the top introduction to Kung Fu Panda as well as being drawn in by the likes of some great movies such as Waltz with Bashir and Changeling. But it was The Class that was triumphant winning the Palme d'Or.

And 2009 sees a string of high profile directors all fighting it out for the top prize. Quentin Tarantino returns to the festival with his latest movie Inglorious Basterd, which stars Brad Pitt, after winning with Pulp Fiction.

His World War II drama follows a group of Jewish-American soldiers who are sent to kill Nazis in Germany.

Other big name filmmakers in the In Competition category include Ken Loach, Ang Lee, Pedro Almadovar and Michael Haneke.

Looking For Eric will be Ken Loach’s ninth film to receive its World Premiere In Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, following his Palme D’Or win for The Wind That Shakes The Barley in 2006.

Fish Tank is the other UK movie that has been selected for the In Competition category. Directed by Andrea Arnold and starring Michael Fassbender the movie follows Mia, a fifteen year old who faces changes when her mother brings home a new boyfriend.

Broken Embraces reunites filmmaker Pedro Almodovar with Oscar winner Penelope Cruz for the first time since 2006's Volver, which landed Cruz a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Despite having a good record of scooping the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in recent years it's Cannes where we get to take a look at Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock.

Pixar's latest movie Up with open this year's festival and Heath Ledger's final movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will also be screened. The actor passed away while filming and Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law stepped in to help complete the film.
