Edward Furlong in Terminator 2

There have been tons of memorable child actors over the years, but what does a child actor do when they are no longer a child?

In some cases the money and fame goes to their head and they become mixed up in the Hollywood downfall of drugs and alcohol. But in some cases they disappear of the radar completely.

We take a look and some of the favourite child actors and see what they've been up to in later life.

Edward Furlong was most famous for his roles as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Danny Vinyard in American History X. His performance in Terminator 2 won him a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance.

Unfortunately, fame saw Furlong turn to drugs and alcohol. At one point he ended up in hospital due a suspected drugs overdose and in 2001 he was arrested for driving without a license and arrested on a separate occasion for driving under the influence.

He was arrested again in 2004 for public intoxication. He underwent many stints in rehab to curb his alcohol and drug addictions and said reportedly said that the year he quit drugs was the hardest year of his life both mentally and physically.

Now, he makes frequent appearances in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and had a small role in the 2011 movie, The Green Hornet. He also has a son with his ex-wife Rachael Bella by the name of Ethan Page Furlong.

Jake Lloyd played Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace. It was his only major film role, with his last role being in 2001 in Madison. The last piece of film work he did was in 2002 when he gave his voice for the Star Wars: Racer Revenge video game. Lloyd graduated Carmel High School in Indiana and is allegedly attending Columbia College Chicago as a film and video major.

After modelling from the age of three for Calvin Klein Kids and Abercrombie Kids, Lindsay Lohan broke into the world of child acting with her most film Parent Trap, in which she played twins Hallie Parker and Annie James.

For her performance in the film she was awarded Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film - Leading Young Actress.

She continued to reel in the awards when she starred in Freaky Friday and won 5 awards for her performance in Mean Girls.

The star was arrested twice in 2007 for DUI and was found to have cocaine on her both times. She went into rehab for 45 days.

Lohan has recently been sentenced to undertake a 120 day prison stint 480 hours community service after being found guilty of misdemeanour after she allegedly stole a $2,500 necklace in January.

Macaulay Culkin was the highest paid child actor in the world and was most famous for Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York and Richie Rich. He won three awards for his performance in Home Alone, including the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor Starring in a Motion Picture.

He came number two in VH1's 100 Greatest Kid Stars and number two in E!'s 50 Greatest Child Stars. He also starred in the late Michael Jackson's Black or White video and the pair were good friends right up until Jackson's death in 2009.

Having not appeared in anything hugely successful since Richie Rich, the actor took to the path of drugs. He was arrested in 2004 for possession of marijuana and prescription drugs Alprazclam and Clonazepam.

A plea bargain was reached and Culkin received three one year suspended prison terms forced enrolment into a probationary drug treatment program and a $540 fine.

The star dated Black Swan actress Mila Kunis from 2002 until their recent split in 2010.

Dustin Diamond is most famous for his role as Samuel "Screech" Powers in Saved By The Bell.

He played the role for the full 13 years that the show aired, from Good Morning, Miss Bliss up until Saved By The Bell: The New Class. 

After Saved By The Bell, Diamond turned to stand up comedy and toured with his act. He also featured in reality TV shows The Weakest Link and Celebrity Boxing 2.

In 2006 Diamond released a porn film that he featured in and directed. The film, Screeched, was made to boost publicity.

In 2008 he signed a deal with Gotham Books to write a tell all behind the scenes book about Saved By The Bell which was released in 2009 under the name Behind The Bell.

Diamond is to star in the animated film Hamlet ADD which comes out later this year.

Mara Wilson is most famed for her role as Matilda in 1996. She won three awards for her performance including the Saturn Award for the Best Performance by a Younger Actor.

After her last film in 2000 Wilson reportedly said she didn't want to be famous and disappeared from the movie scene. In 2005 she did however appear in the stage show of Cinderella in Texas. She has reportedly graduated New York University's Tisch School of Arts.

Haley Joel Osment first starred in Forest Gump and won Young Artist Award for Best Performance by an Actor Under 10 in a Motion Picture.

Osment then went on to star in The Sixth Sense for which his performance as Cole Sear won a staggering 16 awards including the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.

He went on to win his second Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in 2001 for his role in A.I.

In 2006 Osment was arrested for DUI and drug possession and was sentenced to three years probabtion, 60 hours in an alcohol rehabilitation and education programme, $1,500 fine and was ordered to attend at least 26 Alcoholic Anonymus meetings over a six month period.

Now Osment mostly features in the video game series Kingdom Hearts as the voice of Sora.

Finally, a child star that hasn't fallen in to drugs or alcohol and still has a thriving film career. Dakota Fanning first shot to fame after starring in I Am Sam. The actress won four awards for her performance and saw her nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. Being seven-years-old at the time made her the youngest nominee ever.

She then went on to star in War of the Worlds four years later and won three awards for her performance including the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.

Fanning went on to win the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Award for Favourite Movie Actress for her role in Charlotte's Web and the Young Artist Award of Best Performance In A Feature Film (Comedy or Drama) Leading Young Actress for The Secret Life of Bees.

Fannings recent roles in the Twilight Saga and The Runaways have gained her recognition as a serious actor and have helped her transition from child actor to well praised movie star.

Fanning will be hitting out screens at the end of this year, continuing her role as Jane in the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and we can't wait!
