In the director's chair for the film was Ed Zwick, who brought us Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio and The Last Saumri with Tom Cruise.

The team behind the film faced the task of condensing a three year story of struggle and fighting into just two hours as well as a complicated production of recreating the woods and encampment. They found the forests in Lithuania and began filming, a shoot that was almost entirely outdoors.

But throughout the whole process director Zwick built up a close relationship with the Bielski family, in particularly the brothers' children, helping them bring their parent's remarkable story to a wider audience.

Defiance is released on 9th January
