Still coming to terms with his wife's death, Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) is disappointed when all of his four children cancel their Christmas visit.

Realising he's spent too little time with his kids, Frank sets out on a journey across America to visit them all. First he travels to New York to see David, who never turns up at his apartment.

Then he visits Amy (Kate Beckinsale), who is 'high up in advertising' in Chicago, Robert (Sam Rockwell) 'the orchestral conductor' in Denver and, finally, Rosie (Drew Barrymore) 'a dancer in a Vegas show'.

Before Frank returns home he will experience disappointments, misunderstandings, a mugging and an unexpected revelation.

Along the way it becomes clear to Frank that his children are not quite as perfect as his late wife had led him to believe.
