Sunday night sees the most prestigious night on the movie calendar, of course I'm talking about the Oscars, but that isn't the only must have film awards being handed out this week as FemaleFirst announce the 2009 Movie Awards winners.
And the last twelve months has seen some great movies released from independent films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Happy Go Lucky to the big budget blockbusters such as The Dark Knight.
But it's time to reveal the winners...
Best Film - The Dark Knight
It may have been shamelessly overlooked at all the major award ceremonies but not at FemaleFirst as The Dark Knight scoops the top prize.
This film is quite simply brilliant if there is one movie to be seen this year then The Dark Knight has to be it the meaty script and air of menace that sits over the entire picture could lead it to be labelled the best superhero movie of all time.
The film has set the gold standard for this genre of movie that could possibly never be surpassed and it's nice to see the movie buck the trend of films in a franchise getting steadily worse.
Best Director - Danny Boyle
Danny Boyle is the kind of director that makes the movies that he wants to and the small independent Slumdog Millionaire is proving that you can reap the rewards by sticking to your guns.
Boyle is currently riding the award success was for this underdog tale as he cements himself as one of the industry's finest filmmakers.

Best Actor - Mickey Rourke
This truly is the comeback performance of all time as Rourke delivers a powerhouse performance that really is deserving of all the accolades that have come this way.
He puts in the performance of his career as the stubborn and broken Randy 'The Ram' Robinson who has destroyed every relationship he ever had, except that with his adoring public, really does tug at the heart strings and you can't help but feel sorry for the fighter who duct cannot let go.

Best Actress - Sally Hawkins
Happy Go lucky is one of the most underrated movies of the year in the UK but America have taken the film and the central performance of Sally Hawkins to their hearts as she won over critics and audiences as the upbeat Poppy.
Poppy is a fascinating character and strikes the right chord between looking on the bright side of life without being over the top and obnoxious and this performance looks se to propel her to much deserved fame and recognition.

Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker has dominated the awards circuit as he produced the performance of his short career in The Dark Knight, arguably the best superhero movie of all time.
